You’ll be able to take a walking tour of the bridge including the pedestrian area with spectacular views of the Hoover Dam a few weeks before it opens to traffic in early November 2010. More details will be released as the date approaches.

Quick list of changes for 2011: (NOTE: this is not comprensive, be sure to read the manuals as most changes or additional notes are written in BOLD so they’re easy to pick out)

  • 6th Graders allowed to compete and go on to nationals
  • Word count for essay is 1000 words, does not include the title or references list, but does include captions of graphics or illustrations (10 pt deduction for going over 1000 words)
  • Word count for city narrative is 500 words, does not include title (2 pt deduction for going over 500 words)
  • Maximum of 4 pictures or illustrations in the essay
  • The SimCity Judging rubric is changed (AGAIN) – more on this in a separate post that will be posted in the next week or two, along with a revision to the Awesome City Guide
  • Wikipedia is not an acceptable reference (what I would recommend is going to the sources Wikipedia cites at the bottom of each article)
  • SimCity model absolutely must use the medium starter region available on the national Future City website and build the city in the center empty area (p 87-88 in the teacher handbook explains this clearly)

The time and location haven’t been determined yet. The workshop will be held by Dr. David James, who was the mentor to the 2009 and 2010 winning Southern Nevada Future City teams. You can RSVP by signing up as a mentor and we will contact you with more information as the workshop approaches.

We also have a flyer to post to recruit other mentors.
